English Teaching in an Indonesian Vocational High School Majoring Industrial Machinery Engineering

Theoretically, teaching English in Vocational High Schools (VHS) should relate to and support specific skills required by students based on their major. In reality, Indonesian VHS is mostly similar general schools. Discussions this issue have been long contested many researchers diverse contexts, yet, little focus was given the Industrial Machinery Engineering Therefore, present study aims investigate actual needs of industrial machinery engineering learning English. By administering questionnaires 200 at a Medan, mixed-method seeks students' comprehension types language they used, purpose these skills, ability use basic skill must acquire as part course arrangement. To scrutinize deeper investigation, depth-interviews were also employed with ten that school. The findings emphasize several aspects for require establish students’ gaps, wants, needs. This paper provides pedagogical implications could aid improving tailored students.
